Frankie Fredericks

Olympic athlete

Frank Fredericks is a former athlete from Namibia. Running in the 100 metres and 200 metres, he won four silver medals at the Olympic Games, making him Namibia's first and so far only Olympic medalist. He also won gold medals at the World Championships, World Indoor Championships, All-Africa Games and Commonwealth Games. He is the world indoor record-holder for 200 metres, with a time of 19.92 seconds set in 1996. Fredericks has broken 20 seconds for the 200 metres 24 times. The only other man to have done this is Usain Bolt. He also holds the third-fastest non-winning time for the 200 metres. In August 1996, Fredericks ran 19.68 seconds in the Olympic final from Atlanta, Georgia.

Lazaruz Karandu Shiimi known by his stage name as Gazza, is a Namibian kwaito musician from Oshakati. As a soccer lover, he nicknamed himself Gazza after famous English soccer player Paul Gascoigne. He is one of the most commercially successful recording artists in Namibia. Gazza is one of the best selling musicians in his country. Gazza established his self-named music company Gazza Music Productions in 2003, which gained popularity in 2004. Gazza has worked with popular Namibian and South African musicians and producers including The Dogg, Elvo, DJ Cleo, Sunny Boy, Brown Dash, Mandoza, Ees, and Zola to name a few.

Juanita du Plessis

Juanita du Plessis is a famous South African singer, born on 26 April 1972 in Windhoek, Namibia. She became known for her big hit “Ska-Rumba”. Juanita married Herman du Plessis and they have three children: Ruan, Mario and Franja. Her brother, Peter Naudé, is also an accomplished Afrikaans singer. Du Plessis' singing career began in 1998 with her debut album “Juanita". That year she won the CMA awards as best singer, best songwriter and the Association’s Award for outstanding achievement. The total sales to date of all her albums sum up to R1.35 million. In 2010 she received a SAMA award in the category Best Afrikaans DVD for her 10th Annual Platinum Hits. The DVD contains her most successful hits over the first 10 years of her singing career.

Nianell, born Sonia Aletta Nel in Omaruru, Namibia, is a South African singer, pianist, guitarist and composer. After growing up in Windhoek, Nianell graduated with a 3 year diploma in light music from Pretoria Technikon in South Africa and has also studied classical music at Trinity College in London, UK and the University of South Africa. She has a four-octave vocal range and her songs have been described as including "elements of Folk, Pop, R&B, Country, Classic and even Celtic music". Four of her albums; "Who Painted The Moon?", "Angel Tongue", "Life's Gift", and "I Know I'm Lucky", have reached platinum status in South Africa. In April 2011 she released her first album in the United States. Nianell has shared a stage with Christina Aguilera, Andrea Bocelli, Westlife, Diana Ross, Shakira, Freshly Ground, and the Grammy Award winning Soweto Gospel Choir. She released a duet album with Dozi and another duet album with Afro-Pop artists Romanz will be released in May 2011. She has performed in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Ireland, Belgium, Germany, Latvia, France, and the United Kingdom. She and her husband, Andrew Thompson, have triplets, all girls. In 1998 she played netball in the Namibian national team.

Michelle McLean was crowned Miss Universe in 1992. She was 19 years old when she represented Namibia and became the first and only woman from Namibia to win the crown. At the age of 13, Michelle McLean entered the world of International modelling, being crowned Miss Namibia in 1991 and reaching the all time high as Miss Universe, crowned in Bangkok, Thailand, in 1992 - at the age of 18. As a Master of Ceremonies, Michelle McLean has worked in 26 countries, including South America and Asia. Some of her more memorable events have been the hosting of ‘Opera at the Pyramids’; M-Net’s ‘Face of Africa’ competition in Ghana and Egypt and the Loeries Advertising Awards in both 1998 and 2000. Collin Benjamin is a retired Namibian football midfielder. He most recently played for German side TSV 1860 München as well as the Namibia national football team. He represented Namibia at the 2008 African Cup of Nations and earned 32 caps and captained the team for several years. Benjamin was known for his speed and was mainly used for wing play as a defender.

Ambunda won the silver medal in the same division at the All-Africa Games in Abuja, Nigeria. At the 2004 Olympics he was stopped in the quarter finals of the Flyweight division by Germany's eventual bronze medal winner Rustamhodza Rahimov.

Hage Geingob is a Namibian politician who has been Prime Minister of Namibia since 2012. Geingob previously served as Prime Minister from 1990 to 2002; he was Namibia's first Prime Minister following its independence in 1990. Since 2007, he has been Vice-President of the South West Africa People's Organization, Namibia's ruling party, and he was Minister of Trade and Industry from 2008 to 2012. As the Presidency in Namibia is restricted to two terms, President Hifikepunye Pohamba is expected to step down in 2015, and Geingob, as SWAPO Vice-President, will take his place as SWAPO's presidential candidate.

EES is the stage name of Eric Sell a Namibian German Kwaito artist and rapper. Sell was born in Windhoek on 5 October, 1983. He currently lives both in Windhoek, Namibia's capital, and Cologne, Germany. His texts are written in a mixture of Afrikaans and English. He also makes frequent use of Namlish and Namibian German, the German dialect spoken in Namibia, and he popularised the term Nam-Slang for it.

Sunny Boy

Sunday Shipushu, well known as Sunny Boy is a Namibian rapper from Ongwediva. Sunny Boy performs a brand of music known as hikwa, which he engineered by fusing hip hop and kwaito. He rose to fame after collaborating with Gazza on his song "Koko" in 2004. He increased his buzz with his hit single "Balance" in 2005 when he signed with Mshasho Productions. He is known for his socially conscious lyrics, story telling abilities and a complex flow. He has to date released three albums from which he gained critical acclaim as a lyricist. He plans to release his fourth album in 2012. Sunny runs his own record label Yaziza Entertainment. He is the former Ambassador of the Namibia Red Cross Society's for the youth.

Marlice van Vuuren

Marlice Elretha Jansen van Vuuren born 14 May 1976 as Marlice Elrethra van der Merwe, is a popular Namibian conservationist who grew up surrounded by animals on her parents' farm in Namibia where for more than 30 years injured or orphaned animals have found refuge. Marlice also grew up closely with the San Bushmen community and is one of only a handful of white people who can speak their language. Marlice has been working with animals in film productions since the age of 13 and has worked on a number of well known movies with various celebrities including Angelina Jolie. Marlice starred in a documentary about her life "Marlice - A Vision for Africa: A film by Philip Selkirk" in 2008. Marlice and her three legged cheetah Lucky, featured in an advert for a Volkswagen Golf, shown on South African TV in May 2009.

Rudolf Bester

Rudolf Bester is a Namibian football striker who currently plays in the South African Premier Soccer League for Golden Arrows on loan from Orlando Pirates. He previously played for Serbian SuperLiga club FK Čukarički Stankom, having joined the team in January 2008 from Eleven Arrows. He was a part of the Namibian squad at the 2008 African Cup of Nations. He has a record of ten goals for Namibia and is currently the third highest national top goal scorer behind retired Gerros Uri-khob with 12 and Ruben Van Wyk with 11 goals. Despite coming on for Orlando Pirates as a substitute in various games, Bester once gave Pirates an important victory in the last games of the 2011/12 league season. The win came at a very crucial time and contributed to the team's league title. Pirates were held 1–1 by Cosmos and in the dying minutes of the second half, he scored a winning cracker to give the defending champions a 3-point lead on top of the table against relegation bound Jomo Cosmos in the 2011/12 season. In June 2012 Rudolf Bester missed three important international matches due to Injury. He was expected to play for Namibia's Brave Warriors in a 2014 Brazil World Cup Qualifier against Nigeria, Kenya and AFCON 2013 qualifier against Liberia. He recovered from the injury and returned to international duty in a friendly against Rwanda on Saturday, 13 October 2012 in Windhoek. He is one of the few Namibians to play professional football outside Namibia, the first Namibian to win the PSL with Pirates and the first Namibian to play against Tottenham Hotspurs of England.

Alexei Kervezee

Alexei Nicolaas Kervezee is a Dutch cricketer, although he was born in what is now Namibia. Kervezee rose rapidly and smartly through age-group cricket in the Netherlands, and in late July 2005, aged only 15, he made his first-class debut for his national team against Scotland in the Intercontinental Cup. This game was badly affected by the weather and Kervezee did not get to bat, but the following month in the same competition he scored 46 not out against Ireland. He also played against Kenya in March 2006. In April 2006, Kervezee played his first List A matches, for Netherlands A against India A and Pakistan A at Abu Dhabi. The Netherlands A team were badly beaten in both games, but Kervezee's scores of 26 and 25 were among the highest in each Dutch innings. His bowling was singularly unsuccessful, however, with his four overs going for 39 runs. On 4 July 2006 he made his One Day International debut against Sri Lanka at Amstelveen's VRA Ground. It was a chastening experience overall for the Dutch team as Sri Lanka piled up 443/9, a world record ODI score, but in the Netherlands' reply Kervezee played well for 47, putting on 69 with Tim de Leede. Two days later, against the same opponents, he made 18. Kervezee played several Under-17 and Under-19 matches over the following days, as well as one game against Italy in the European Cricket Championship, then in early August he returned to ODI action with small scores against Scotland and Ireland.

Andimba Toivo ya Toivo

Herman Andimba Toivo ya Toivo is a Namibian politician who was active in the independence movement. He is a founding member of the Ovamboland People's Congress in 1957, at the beginning of the independence movement. Toivo was born in Omangundu in Oshana Region in the north of Namibia. Toivo ya Toivo fought for the Allied Forces during World War II. Later, because of his political activities in support of Namibian independence, he was arrested in 1966 by the South African authorities. On 26 January 1968, he was sentenced by a Pretorian court to 20 years' imprisonment. He was incarcerated at Robben Island, near Cape Town, where he spent most of his time isolated from his fellow countrymen. Ya Toivo was released on 1 March 1984. From 1984 to 1991, he was the Secretary General of the South West Africa People's Organization. Toivo was a SWAPO member of the Constituent Assembly, which was in place from November 1989 to March 1990, immediately prior to independence, and upon independence in March 1990 he became a member of the National Assembly. He was also Minister of Mines and Energy from 1990 until his appointment as Minister of Labour on 26 March 1999. After over three years in that position, he was appointed as Minister of Prisons on 27 August 2002, switching posts with Marco Hausiku; he remained Minister of Prisons until 2006.

Hosea Kutako

Chief Hosea Komombumbi Kutako was an early Namibian nationalist leader and member of the South West African People's Organization. Kutako, alongside Rev. Michael Scott led petitions to the United Nations which eventually led to the recognition of Namibia's status as a sovereign country under colonial control by South Africa. He was also the Leader of Hereroland from 1968-1970. Hosea Kutako is considered a national hero in Namibia. In 1920, Hosea Kutako was officially appointed as leader of the Herero by Frederik Maharero. Frederik had been empowered to transfer power by his father, Herero chief Samuel Maharero, who had been exiled after the Herero War and was since banned from entering the country by the South African Mandatory Administration. Hosea Kutako took over his role as a commitment to preserve the memory of the glorious times of the Herero before and during the German colonisation as well as of the atrocities in the battle of Waterberg. The seat of his chieftaincy was situated at the settlement of Toasis in the Aminuis area. Already in 1920, he founded the Green Flags, an association to keep up tradition, and went on by founding the Red Flags in 1923, after Samuel Maharero’s death. Kutako prompted and organised the transfer of Samuel Maharero’s body and its funeral on Okahandja next to the grave of Jonker Afrikaner. Kutako also founded the Truppenspieler association. It was meant to get military importance which was opposed both by the South African authorities and by Sam Nujoma, the co-founder of the South West African People's Organisation SWAPO. So, the Truppenspieler had to content themselves with an accompanying role at Herero Day. Along with Nujoma, Hosea Kutako founded the South West African National Union in 1959, an organisation that was to merge into SWAPO a year later. It later re-emerged as a separate political entity. Despite his age, Hosea Kutako particularly engaged for the independence of future Namibia.

Dan Craven is a racing cyclist from Namibia, riding for Team IG-Sigma Sport. Craven joined the Rapha Condor team for the 2009 season. Craven was the 2008 African Road Race champion, having taken the crown in Casablanca in November just two days after he had picked up a Bronze in the African Time Trial Championships. A strong time-trialer, Craven was a runner up in the 2006 African Championships, and boasts a 7th place in the time trial at the 2007 B World Championships in Cape Town.

Williams has since played for the Namibia A team, scoring a century against Canada in his first appearance in this side.

A member of the Namibia national football team, Kaimbi competed with the team at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations. He scored twice in Namibia's win over Djibouti in the first round of African qualification for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in November 2011. Now, He plays for Bangkok Glass in Thai Premier League.

Mishake Muyongo

Mishake Muyongo is a Namibian politician and former Member of Parliament who is currently living in exile in Denmark. Muyongo was born in Linyanti. In September 1964, Muyongo became the president of the Caprivi African National Union when its leader Simbwaye was arrested and disappeared in South-African custody. Muyongo escaped to Zambia during a South-African raid at the CANU office in Katima Mulilo. While living in exile in Dar es Salaam, Muyongo negotiated a merger with Sam Nujoma's South-West Africa People's Organisation party. Both parties would fight together to liberate Namibia from South-African rule. Muyongo held various positions in SWAPO before he was expelled in 1980: representative in Zambia, educational secretary, SWAPO Vice-President. In 1985, Muyongo led his CANU into a new political party, the United Democratic Party which soon joined the Democratic Turnhalle Alliance group of parties but was expelled again in 1998 after rumours of secessionism surfaced. He was a member of the National Assembly from 1990 to 1999. In the 1994 presidential election he placed second, behind President Sam Nujoma, with 23.08% of the vote. After Muyongo expressed support for Caprivi secession in 1998, he was suspended from the DTA in August 1998 at an extraordinary meeting of the party's executive committee. Muyongo fled the country with the former governor of the Caprivi Region, John Mabuku. He was replaced as DTA President by Katuutire Kaura, who called for Muyongo to be brought back and put on trial.

He participated in List A cricket between 2001 and 2005 and made six One Day International appearances in the World Cup in 2003. His brothers, Andries "Jan-Berrie" Burger and Sarel Burger played for Namibia in the World Cup, while Bernie Burger has played in the ICC Trophy. In the latter part of 2006, Louis Burger has hit two centuries, the first of his career in October against Limpopo, and the second, a career-topping high of 120 against the United Arab Emirates in December.

Le-Roy Quido Mohamed, who performs under the name Quido, is a Namibian rapper. He rose to fame in 2010 with a song entitled "Die For My City". He then put the underground rap game on hold and decided to go into the mainstream music scene, during which he dropped a couple of mixtapes. In 2010 he created a hype as huge as that of an album when he dropped the Who Is Quido? mixtape. Quido is signed to the 061 Music label, Kanibal was initially the one that was eager to sign him to his Black Market label but had to many projects on his hands. He dropped his debut album in the last quarter of 2011.

Beata Nandjala Naigambo is a Namibian long-distance runner who specializes in the marathon. Her personal best time is 2:27:54, set at the Dubai Marathon in 2013. She competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics, where she finished 28th out of 81 total participants in the Women's marathon. At the 2012 Summer Olympics she finished 38th out of 107 finishers with a time of 2:31:16.

Kenneth Clement Yates is a former cricketer who played first-class and List A cricket in England. Yates was a right-handed batsman and wicketkeeper. He was born at Keetmanshoop in what was then South-West Africa. In 1961, Yates played a single first-class match for Cambridge University against the Free Foresters. In the match he batted once, remaining unbeaten on 0 and taking 3 catches behind the stumps. In 1963, he played a single Minor Counties Championship match for Cambridgeshire against Wiltshire. The following year, Yates played in a List A match for Cambridgeshire against Essex in the 1964 Gillette Cup. In his only List A match, he scored five runs but did not make any dismissals.

Snyman played for Walsall in the Birmingham League during 2006 and signed for Staffordshire for 2007. Gerrie was the overseas player at Tamworth cricket club during the 2003 and 2004 season before moving to Walsall Cricket Club during the 2006 and 2007 seasons. He played a big part in the 2006 side that won the Birmingham League Premier Division. This is one of the most coveted titles in English club cricket. Since the beginning of August, Snyman has made his Second XI Championship debut for Worcestershire's Second XI, taking one wicket for the team. In a game against the United Arab Emirates on November 28, 2007, Snyman hit a world record 17 sixes in a single limited overs innings, culminating in a final score of 196 from 113 balls.

Libertina Inaviposa Amathila is a Namibian physician and politician. She has been the Deputy Prime Minister of Namibia since March 2005. Amathila was born in Fransfontein, Kunene Region. Under the SWAPO Nationhood Programme, she received a scholarship to study medicine in Poland and graduated from the Warsaw Medical Academy in 1969, becoming Namibia's first female doctor. At SWAPO's 1969 Consultative Congress in Tanzania, she became Deputy Secretary for Health and Welfare on the SWAPO Central Committee and Director of the SWAPO Women's Council. She later worked in SWAPO refugee camps. Immediately prior to independence, she was a SWAPO member of the Constituent Assembly, which was in place from November 1989 to March 1990, and since independence in March 1990 she has been a member of the National Assembly of Namibia. She was Minister of Regional and Local Government and Housing from March 21, 1990 to September 12, 1996, at which point she became Minister of Health and Social Services, serving in that position until becoming Deputy Prime Minister on March 21, 2005. Amathila received the Ongulumbashe Medal for Bravery and Long Service in 1987, and she was the 1991 recipient of the Nansen Refugee Award. In September 1999, she was elected for a one-year term as Chairperson of the World Health Organization's Regional Committee for Africa, and on May 15, 2000 she elected as the President of the 53rd Session of the World Health Assembly.

Katuutire Kaura is a Namibian politician. He has been President of the Democratic Turnhalle Alliance since 1998 and was Leader of the Official Opposition from 2000 to 2005. Kaura was born in Ombujondjupa, Otjozondjupa Region. He became an exile in the United States during the 1970s and taught high school at Nyack High School in Upper Nyack, New York from 1972 to 1978; he also taught at Rockland Community College from 1973 to 1975. During the same period, Kaura attended Long Island University and Columbia University. From 1989 to 1998, Kaura was Vice-President of the DTA. After DTA President Mishake Muyongo expressed support for Caprivi secession in 1998, he was suspended from the DTA in August 1998, and Kaura became DTA President. He called for Muyongo, who had fled into exile, to be brought back to Namibia and put on trial. Immediately prior to independence, Kaura was a member of the Constituent Assembly, which was in place from November 1989 to March 1990. He has served as a member of the National Assembly of Namibia since independence in 1990. He ran for President of Namibia in 1999 and 2004, receiving 9.6 percent and 5.12 percent of the vote, respectively. Following the 1999 election, he became Leader of the Official Opposition in April 2000.

Benjamin Hauwanga, commonly known as B.H., is a Namibian businessman. His parents separated while he was a young boy; his mother single-handedly raised him, although his father visited the family regularly. He has eight siblings. He was fascinated with business at a very young age; as a child he sold indigenous food after school to contribute to the household income while his mother worked as a domestic worker. As with every business, money is the key and the main objective: Whenever he got, he used the change to buy sweets and resold them at school to get more money and increase cash-flow. At the age of nine, he started cleaning yards and got paid weekly. This was a great incentive for him but later he realized that the money coming in weekly was not enough to buy enough stock to satisfy the demand for the product at school. He arranged to receive the money month-end; that improved the cash-flow and the stock levels. As the cash-flow improved, he bought a bicycle to extend his operations. The bicycle took him three years to pay off. His first shop was a cardboard-box in front of his mother's house in the black township, called "the Location".

Bience Philomina Gawanas is a Namibian lawyer and the current Commissioner of Social Affairs on the African Commission. She was a Commissioner on the Public Service Commission in Namibia from 1991 to 1996, and an Ombudswoman in the Namibian Government from 1996 to 2003. She has also been a Lecturer in Gender Law at the University of Namibia, Director of the Board of the Central Bank of Namibia, and involved in many non-governmental organizations including Secretary-General of the Namibian National Women's Organization and patron of Namibian Federation of Persons with Disabilities. As Chairperson of the Law Reform Commission she oversaw the passage of the Married Persons' Equality Act. The commission also did extensive work on Rape Acts and other important laws that were eventually passed after her time.

He took part in the 2004 Intercontinental Cup where the Namibians lost by five wickets to Uganda.

Nannie de Villiers

Nannie de Villiers was a professional tennis player who represented South Africa. De Villiers was born in neighbouring Namibia but moved at a young age. De Villiers made her début in 1993, at the small ITF Johannesburg tournament. She also played her next event in her native country, in Pretoria, winning the doubles event. Although she officially retired in 2003, she made a minor-comeback in 2007, entering the Cape Town event, losing in the first round singles and reaching the semi-finals doubles. She never surpassed the singles qualifying stages at a Grand Slam. Despite never winning a WTA Tour singles title, she won four on the ITF tour, and 22 doubles titles there.

Hendrik Witbooi

Reverend Dr Kaptein Hendrik Witbooi was a Namibian politician and the seventh Captain of the ǀKhowesin clan. A member of SWAPO from 1976 until his death, Witbooi brought with him several clans of Namaqua into the liberation organisation. Imprisoned numerous times during the Namibian War of Independence, Witbooi was first elected as Vice-President of SWAPO in 1984 and was re-elected for the last time in 1997. A member of the Constituent Assembly in 1989-90, Witbooi served in the National Assembly until his 2004 retirement, including a stint as Minister of Labour and Manpower Development. Witbooi became Namibia's first Deputy Prime Minister in 1995. He served in that position until 2004. In October 2009, it was reported that Witbooi was facing major medical problems and had slipped into a coma at the Roman Catholic Hospital in Windhoek. On 13 October, Witbooi died at the Roman Catholic Hospital due to cancer.

Louis van der Westhuizen is a Namibian cricketer. He is a left-handed batsman and a slow left-arm bowler. He has played first-class cricket for the senior Namibian cricket team since 2006, having previously lined up for the Under-19s. Van der Westhuizen played for the Namibians in the Under-19s World Cup in 2006. Generally speaking, van der Westhuizen occupies the position of opening batsman for the Namibian side in limited-overs cricket. He was also part of the Namibian Under-19 team which won the Under-19 African Championship in 2007. Van der Westhuizen has success as a batsman in the Twenty20 format of the game. Playing against Kenya in a Twenty20 match, he scored 145 runs from 50 balls, then the third-highest individual score of all time in top level Twenty20. He also scored an innings of 159*, with 16 sixes, against Kenya in Kampala during the 2011 ICC World Cricket League Africa Region Twenty20 Division One tournament.

Marco Hausiku

Marco Mukoso Hausiku is a Namibian politician. Previously serving as Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honorable Mr. Hausiku now serves as the Deputy Prime Minister of Namibia. Hausiku was born in Kapako, Okavango Region. Immediately prior to independence, Hausiku was a SWAPO member of the Members of the Constituent Assembly which was in place from November 1989 to March 1990, and since 1990 he has been a member of the National Assembly of Namibia. He served as Minister of Lands, Resettlement and Rehabilitation from 1990 to 1992, as Minister of Works, Transport and Communication from 1992 to March 1995 and as Minister of Prisons and Correctional Services from March 1995 to August 2002. He was appointed Minister of Labour on 27 August 2002, and after nearly two years in that position he was appointed as Minister of Foreign Affairs by President Sam Nujoma on 27 May 2004. This appointment followed Nujoma's dismissal of the previous foreign minister, Hidipo Hamutenya, in the midst of a struggle within SWAPO regarding the nomination of a presidential candidate. Hausiku received the 16th highest number of votes, 345, in the election to the Central Committee of SWAPO at the party's August 2002 congress. He is SWAPO's Secretary for External Relations as of January 2008.
